You can wear that.
Your appearance belongs to you.
An unofficial public service · no powers · no uniform · no permission required
You cannot run. You cannot hide. When people see you, they may become a little more like you too.
Fashion Police Are you really going to wear that with that?
You Yes.
Fashion Police What will people think?
You Hopefully, for themselves.
The one law
The Fashion Police shall have no authority over fashion. Their duty is to protect everyone’s freedom to look ridiculous.
UNDERSTAND THIS IN TEN SECONDS
Your appearance belongs to you.
Difference does not require permission.
What somebody wears never makes them responsible for another person’s harmful behaviour.
Forced labour, unsafe products, fraud, discrimination and coercion deserve evidence and action.
TACTIC NUMBER TWO
That sentence pretends to respect a choice while attaching fear and blame to it.
If something happens, responsibility belongs to whoever causes it. Clothing is not consent, provocation or proof of fault.
A useful safety warning names a real hazard and gives evidence. An invented warning used to control somebody is not care.
THE ACTUALLY SERIOUS PART
Fashion may be silly, stupid, dumb, beautiful, childish and deeply intelligent—sometimes all at once. The danger begins when play becomes one approved direction and difference becomes a defect.
One body, class, gender, nation or identity is presented as the proper one.
“What will people think?” or “If something happens, do not blame me” replaces a real, evidenced warning.
Expensive, famous or official is treated as automatically better, wiser or more human.
The uniform, designer, commissioner or institution is no longer allowed to be questioned or mocked.
Clothing can reflect and amplify hierarchy; it does not, by itself, cause extremism. Treat the demand for compulsory visual conformity as a warning to stop, look again and protect human choice.
A NOTE FOR DESIGNERS
“The pen is mightier than the sword because the pen designs it to be a weapon instead of a tool.”
Design changes how people move, what they notice and how they interpret one another. Ask whether a design helps somebody live, rest, communicate and play—or turns them into a rank, target, commodity or weapon.
WHEN ACTION IS NEEDED
COMMISSIONER CURRENTLY UNAVAILABLE
Not because he policed fashion, but because his work helped liberate it. The role is symbolic: protect difference, invite transformation and never make transformation compulsory.
Never arrest difference. Investigate whoever profits by suppressing or exploiting it.

Production note from the official David Bowie site ↗CASE FILE 1982 · VALLEY GIRL
Moon Zappa reproduced a living San Fernando Valley way of speaking. Frank and Moon Zappa turned it into musical satire. Radio, listeners and news coverage then carried the mannerisms across the United States. The song did not create the original people; it amplified a version of them.
Young people already speak, dress and behave in their own way.
The behaviour is copied affectionately, critically or comically.
Music and media carry the imitation far beyond its starting place.
People repeat the parody—jokingly, seriously or somewhere between.
The copy changes as it moves, and becomes something people can choose for themselves.

Wear pyjamas instead of performing importance. Project comfort. Somebody may copy you, or independently discover the same thing. Either way, comfort has become communicable.
Pyjamas are admissible everywhere unless they begin issuing orders.
THE FASHION POLICE OATH
I will not arrest difference.
I will investigate harm.
I will not confuse clothing with consent.
I will warn only about hazards I can explain.
I will permit the uniform and its wearer to be mocked.
I will tell nobody.
I will tell everybody.
EXCLUSIVE TO EVERYONE
FASHION POLICE · DEVON CASE FILE
Pyjamas, wellies and no apologies: the Devonshire fashion comeback has been spotted at farm shops, beaches and dog walks. New sightings include Tigger families in puddles, grown-ups on wheely shoes and light-up trainers at street discos. If you see it, appreciate it.
