Psychological technology in music

Hear the influence. Keep the choice.

Knots · psy-ops counter-influence programs

These are transparent psychological self-defence tools carried in rhythm, repetition, humour and story. They are designed to help you notice how your mind and body respond to influence—so you can navigate the world a little more safely, question the story and make your own decision.

What this technology does

Not another story to obey. A way to notice the story arriving.

Influence often reaches the nervous system before conscious reasoning: a threat signal, a status cue, a repeated phrase, a uniform, a shame response or the fear of being left outside the group. Knots brings those mechanisms into awareness.

  1. 01
    Feel

Notice the physical or emotional response without treating it as proof.

  2. 02
    Name

Identify the lever: fear, shame, repetition, authority, belonging, distraction or manufactured desire.

  3. 03
    Check

Separate the reaction from the evidence and ask who benefits from the story.

  4. 04
    Choose

Pause, refuse, investigate, reconnect or act—with the decision returned to you.

TRACK — 01

Knots – Monster

Examine how fear, repetition and enemy-making can turn a person or group into a monster before evidence has been considered.

TRACK — 02

knots – who put it

Ask where a thought came from: direct experience, repetition, authority, advertising, social pressure—or a story placed there by somebody else.

TRACK — 03

knots – Say hello

Notice the body’s rapid social signals—approach, retreat, trust and threat—and create a pause before those signals become a fixed judgement.

TRACK — 04

Knots – Sell us more shit

Expose the machinery that turns insecurity, status and manufactured desire into consumption while disguising wants as needs.

TRACK — 05

Knots – easy target (reggae)

Explore how exhaustion, isolation, shame and fear can make any of us easier to steer—and why vulnerability is not stupidity or failure.

TRACK — 07

Knots – Let me untie you

Loosen inherited labels and psychological knots without replacing them with another person’s commands or identity.

TRACK — 08

knots – before you think

Recognise what the nervous system and older survival responses do before conscious thought catches up: friend, foe, follow, fear and awareness.

TRACK — 09

Knots – Boss (big old sack of shit)

Use satire to puncture the costumes of authority, compulsory social roles and the language used to make domination appear normal.

TRACK — 10

Knots – No

Practise the smallest word of agency: a boundary, a refusal and the right to stop before compliance becomes automatic.

The complete experiment

Knots — Let Me Untie You

A journey through perspective. Knots began with a simple observation: a person can carry thoughts, reactions, fears, wants, assumptions and rules without necessarily knowing where they came from. Some protect us. Some help us. Some become tangled. The project calls those tangles knots.

Rather than cutting the rope, attacking the person carrying the knot or telling somebody what they must think, the songs ask whether the knot can be observed, understood and gently untied.

The question

If the information remains substantially the same but the musical perspective changes, how does understanding change?

The words, music and communication method were examined in stages. At every stage the underlying meaning was kept as stable as possible, allowing the changing musical context—not a changed argument—to become the subject of comparison.

The same information

Three musical perspectives

01

Universal

Blends long-term musical-memory mechanisms with rapid emotional and contextual communication.

02

Commercial

Explores musical mechanisms commonly used in highly memorable individual advertisements to communicate meaning quickly.

03

Pop

Explores structural characteristics associated with songs that have demonstrated unusually persistent human recognition, repetition and memory across time.

The cross-era Pop reference was a working perspective—not an absolute global ranking. Streaming, record sales, radio and public performance, repeated cultural use, longevity and international transmission were considered. The purpose was to identify memory mechanisms such as ritual, repetition, longing, tension, reflection, stillness, universality, bodily rhythm, attraction and communal memory—not to copy the reference songs.

Each clean song was generated twice in each perspective. The A and B interpretations are both retained because generative interpretation is not completely deterministic: variation is part of the evidence, not an error to hide.

The untying direction

Begin with relationship. Travel back toward the reaction.

The original conceptual sequence ran from Before You Think to Say Hello. The archive reverses it. To untie a knot, the listener travels from recognising relationship, through inherited patterns, accumulation, recovery, vulnerability, desire, refusal and authority, until reaching the earliest reaction before conscious thought.

  1. 01

    Say Hello

    Recognise relationship.

  2. 02

    Let Me Untie You

Examine and release false inherited associations.

  3. 03

    Monster

Recognise runaway accumulation and the boundary of enough.

  4. 04

    The Ladder

Support recovery as a process rather than demand a switch.

  5. 05

    Easy Target

Meet vulnerability with support, not exploitation.

  6. 06

    Sell Us More

Distinguish a need from repeatedly manufactured desire.

  7. 07

    No

Recover the boundary and the possibility of refusal.

  8. 08

    BOSS

Examine authority by what it does, not what it calls itself.

  9. 09

    Who Put It?

Trace the thought and test whether evidence still supports it.

  10. 10

    Before You Think

Reach the reaction that occurred before conscious thought.

How it was made

Creative intention translated into sound.

The lyrics, ideas, direction, selection and production came through a human creative process. Generative AI tools helped translate creator-directed lyrics, concepts, structural experiments and style prompts into finished audio.

For AL, this technology is also an accessibility tool: it allows creative intention to become music when traditional physical performance is not always possible. A person’s ability to communicate through music should not depend upon their physical ability to perform every instrument heard in a recording. The test is whether something meaningful was communicated.

The three-generation collection was first assembled as one continuous lossless WAV of approximately 3 hours and 21 minutes, then divided into individual tracks. The tracks were loudness-balanced toward a shared listening reference while preserving useful dynamics and protecting peaks.

A related route for children

Mini Knots

A child-friendly companion exploring related ideas through simpler language, playful characters and different ways of listening and understanding.

Mini Knots gives younger listeners something they can enjoy, discuss and interpret in their own way without requiring them to hear the adult material. It can stand on its own.

The covers form a dynamic children’s book. They can be arranged in different orders to tell different stories. This gives children freedom to find relationships between the pictures while an adult’s experience can help open conversation, rather than impose one fixed route through the meaning.

Knots and Mini Knots do not have to be experienced together. The adult project can be direct, uncomfortable, humorous and sometimes explicit; Mini Knots provides a simpler, playful route. They should remain clearly separated whenever children or family audiences are involved.

Why it is free

Available without debt.

These projects are not being released because AL wants money from them. They are being shared so people can hear them. If something helps somebody communicate, think differently, understand another person, question a fear, laugh, talk or find a little more peace, then it has already achieved something worthwhile.

Both projects are shared under CC0 — No Rights Reserved. You may listen, download, copy, share, broadcast, remix or pass the work on. You do not need to pay, ask permission or owe anything for receiving it.

Meaning beyond one medium

KNOTS/1.0 — a simple semantic view

A computer does not understand meaning merely because it is written as code; it needs a parser, definitions, state and feedback. The portable pattern used here is input → internal state → test → decision → action → feedback. The music carries the ideas for a listener; these operations state the same core relationships in a form that a computational system can map to explicit variables and rules.

01BEFORE_YOU_THINK

Treat the first reaction as information, then test it before turning it into a decision.

02WHO_PUT_IT

Trace an internal pattern to its inputs and decide whether to keep, modify or release it.

03BOSS

Do not confuse position, volume, status or control with knowledge, value or wisdom.

04NO

An entity capable of choice must also be capable of refusal and maintaining a boundary.

05SELL_US_MORE

Test whether demand decreases when a need is met or repeats because desire is being induced.

06EASY_TARGET

Recognise reduced capacity as a condition for support, never an opportunity for exploitation.

07THE_LADDER

Offer the support, trust and responsibility needed for the next possible step; a setback does not erase progress.

08MONSTER

Limit the destructive feedback loop without destroying the person or system carrying it.

09LET_ME_UNTIE_YOU

Inspect learned associations together and release connections that evidence does not support.

Red Hot Voodoo — Let Me Untie You

The earlier Knots protest/Afrobeat conversation asked what rhythm, repetition and call-and-response can do to a message. A phrase can feel familiar or urgent before we have tested its claim. The songs turn that observation back on the listener: Who put the thought there? Notice the reaction, trace its source, check the evidence and keep the choice.

This edition carries the same ten adult Knots meanings through a different rhythmic setting. Its Archive description places high-energy funk-rock inside a repeating 12/8 cycle informed by Yanvalou-style Haitian Vodou rhythm. Hand drums and bell patterns act as the pulse; 3:2 and 4:3 tensions, syncopated bass, dry drums, clipped guitar and rhythmic vocals work within it. That Haitian rhythmic reference has its own identity alongside the earlier African protest/Afrobeat perspective.

Listen across versions

Each of the ten songs has two generated interpretations here. Compare a song with an earlier Knots version: what does the pulse make you feel, when do the words land, and does the meaning change for you? Those are listening questions, not claims that a measured psychological effect has been proved.

The music was produced through creator-directed lyrics and rhythmic instructions with AI-assisted generation. The Archive release is shared under CC0.
