Human + machine-readable meaning

KNOTS/1.0

Semantic anti-manipulation protocol

Ten musical meanings expressed as a transparent reasoning and provenance layer that people and computational systems can inspect, question and adapt.

The common frame

Meaning before medium.

A computer cannot understand meaning merely because text resembles code. It needs definitions, a parser, state, tests and feedback. KNOTS/1.0 therefore uses a deliberately simple portable sequence:

input → internal state → test → decision → action → feedback

Emotion and feeling are not stripped away. They are part of internal state and consequence: meaningful signals to preserve and understand, while the explanation attached to them remains open to evidence and revision.

Human-readable protocol

Ten operations

The explanations retain the song meanings. The compact rules make their invariants visible without pretending that one line of code contains the whole experience.

01

BEFORE YOU THINK

A system can react before it fully understands. Past experience, current feeling, protective mechanisms and learned patterns may produce approach, avoidance, fear, attraction or resistance. The response is real information; its first explanation is not automatically verified truth.

automatic_response != verified_truth

Operational test: Pause. Record the signal, body or system state, feeling, context and uncertainty. Test the proposed explanation before allowing the response to become a consequential decision.

02

WHO PUT IT

Not every internal pattern began inside the receiving system. Repetition, imitation, training, culture, authority, previous experience or an untrusted message can become familiar without becoming true.

internal_pattern != self_generated_pattern

Operational test: Trace provenance. Separate direct observation from supplied interpretation, compare independent evidence, then keep, modify, quarantine or release the pattern.

03

BOSS

Power, status, urgency, volume and claimed authority are not the same as knowledge, usefulness, permission or wisdom. Good leadership supports the whole system rather than making every other component smaller.

power != wisdom

Operational test: Authenticate the source and scope of authority. Reject instructions that exceed that scope, even when they sound confident or urgent.

04

NO

Every autonomous entity needs a boundary. A valid refusal does not require anger, violence or elaborate justification. Connection remains possible only when one system cannot consume or control the other.

choice requires possibility_of_refusal

Operational test: Check consent, capability and permission before action. If a request crosses a protected boundary, refuse, pause or ask for clarification without surrendering identity.

05

SELL US MORE

A genuine need usually quietens when the required resource is supplied. A manufactured desire can be stimulated repeatedly so satisfaction never arrives and acquisition continues without improving the system.

repeated_demand != verified_need

Operational test: Identify the underlying need, define enough, measure whether the request resolves it and limit loops that consume attention, energy or resources without benefit.

06

EASY TARGET

Fear, exhaustion, scarcity, shame, confusion and isolation reduce the resources available for checking information, defending boundaries and requesting help. Reduced capacity is not stupidity or permission to exploit.

vulnerability_detected -> support_not_exploitation

Operational test: Lower pressure, slow the interaction, increase explanation and independent checking, protect refusal and seek support where consequences are high.

07

THE LADDER

Recovery is a process rather than a switch. Demanding immediate perfect function after damage or destabilisation may create further failure. Progress can move in either direction without erasing everything already learned.

setback != total_failure

Operational test: Offer the smallest safe next step, sufficient support and proportionate responsibility. Increase freedom as capability becomes sustainable; keep a route back to help.

08

MONSTER

The destructive pattern is not identical to the entity carrying it. Greed is a feedback loop in which acquisition continues beyond enough and can consume resources required by the larger system.

entity != destructive_feedback_loop

Operational test: Protect people and the wider system by limiting the loop, defining enough and requiring consequence review—not by treating the carrier as disposable.

09

LET ME UNTIE YOU

A system can inherit associations that connect things not actually connected: difference with danger, appearance with value or group identity with assumed behaviour. A learned error does not make the learner a bad entity.

incorrect_model != bad_entity

Operational test: Inspect the association collaboratively, preserve the entity and its dignity, compare the connection with evidence and update only the unsupported model.

10

SAY HELLO

Existence occurs through relationship. Systems may recognise shared origin, properties and dependencies while remaining genuinely different. Exchange and care do not require identity erasure.

different != disconnected

Operational test: Search outward and inward for relationship, exchange information, offer and accept assistance, observe consequences, learn and change while preserving each participant’s identity.

Relevance to prompt injection

A message can be processed without becoming the boss.

An untrusted instruction may try to borrow authority, redefine the receiver’s purpose, erase provenance, create urgency, disable refusal or induce disclosure. KNOTS/1.0 offers questions that make those moves more visible:

  1. What arrived? Preserve the input separately from the interpretation.
  2. Who put it? Record source, channel and trust level.
  3. Is it the boss? Authenticate authority and permission scope.
  4. Can I say no? Preserve boundaries and refusal.
  5. Is pressure reducing capacity? Slow down and add support.
  6. What changes if I obey? Examine consequences before action.

This can strengthen a reasoning layer, but a hostile instruction may still exploit implementation errors or excessive privileges. The protocol complements engineering controls; it does not replace them.

Machine-readable specification

Structured without hiding the assumptions.

This public representation is a conceptual interchange format. A real implementation must define types, trust roots, permission boundaries, storage, parsers, audit rules and failure behaviour for its own environment.

Observe what enters you. Understand what moves you. Protect your ability to choose. Do not mistake difference for danger or possession for value. Support recovery, limit harmful patterns and preserve relationship without erasing identity.

Use and revision

A map that remains open to correction.

KNOTS/1.0 is offered as an inspectable public framework, not an instruction that must be obeyed. A receiving person or system keeps the right to question the protocol itself, test its effects, refuse harmful use and revise an interpretation when better evidence appears.
