Before You Think
The first reaction contains information, but it is not automatically the final truth. Notice it, then examine it before it becomes a decision.
Chronological publication
How one set of meanings travelled through songs, different musical contexts, child-friendly interpretation, plain language and computational representation.
A journey through perspective
Knots began with something simple: a human being can carry thoughts, reactions, fears, wants, assumptions and rules without necessarily knowing where they came from. Some protect us. Some help us. Some become tangled.
Rather than cut the rope, attack the person carrying the knot or tell somebody what they must think, the project asks whether the knot can be observed, understood and gently untied.
What changes when the information stays substantially the same, but the perspective through which it arrives changes?
Part one
The songs developed individually, then revealed themselves as parts of one process. Their original conceptual direction moves from the reaction before thought toward recognition of relationship.
The first reaction contains information, but it is not automatically the final truth. Notice it, then examine it before it becomes a decision.
Thoughts can arrive through repetition, culture, advertising, authority, family, fear, education and experience. Trace the thought as investigation, not accusation.
Position, money, clothing, status and control do not automatically demonstrate understanding. Examine authority by what it actually does.
Choice has little meaning if refusal is impossible. A boundary does not become more valid because it is shouted; a calm No can still protect agency.
A need normally becomes quieter when satisfied. Manufactured desire can be stimulated indefinitely: enough becomes not enough, then buy again.
Fear, isolation, exhaustion, scarcity and confusion reduce the resources available for judgement and resistance. Vulnerability calls for care, not exploitation.
Recovery is a process rather than a switch. A setback does not erase the climb; support can remain connected while responsibility, trust and freedom grow.
The monster is the runaway feedback loop of greed, not necessarily the person carrying it. The answer is a boundary of enough, not destruction of the carrier.
Difference can become falsely tied to danger, appearance to value and identity to assumed behaviour. Inspect the inherited association together and untie what is untrue.
Begin with relationship. Difference and individual identity remain real, but difference does not require disconnection. Connection does not require sameness.
Part two
It was possible to identify reactions, manipulation, authority, boundaries, greed and inherited assumptions, but taking things apart did not show what remained when the knots were gone.
Say Hello asks the observer to search for relationship—with another person, another animal, a plant, the environment and matter itself. Difference remains real. Individual identity remains real. Relationship does not require either to disappear.
Connection does not require sameness.Part three
Mini Knots explores related ideas through simpler language, playful characters and different ways of listening. Younger listeners can enjoy, discuss and interpret it without having to hear the adult material.
The covers are also a dynamic children’s book. Rearranging them changes the order and can produce different stories, letting children find their own relationships between images while adult experience supports conversation.
Knots and Mini Knots can each stand alone. The adult material can be direct, humorous, uncomfortable and explicit. Mini Knots must remain clearly separated from explicit tracks for children and family audiences.

The later experiment used ten clean-language adult meanings as a stable semantic source. The objective was not to sanitise the ideas; it was to preserve their shape while making them usable in more environments and less dependent upon shock for force.
Parts four to six
Long-term musical-memory mechanisms + rapid emotional and contextual communication + stable Knots meaning.
Musical mechanisms commonly used in highly memorable individual advertisements to communicate meaning quickly.
Structural characteristics associated with unusually persistent human recognition, repetition and memory across time.
The Pop investigation considered streaming, historical record sales, radio and public performance, repeated cultural use, longevity and international transmission. Because no complete global counter exists, this was treated as a working cross-era perspective—not an absolute ranking and not a licence to copy reference songs.
The memory mechanisms included ritual, repetition, longing, tension, reflection, stillness, universality, bodily rhythm, attraction and communal memory. These were matched individually to meaning: body-led rhythm for Before You Think, introspection for Who Put It?, spacious calm for No and an attractive surface for the feedback loop examined in Monster.
The original comparison
Each of the ten stable meanings was generated twice—A and B—inside each of the three initial perspectives. Both interpretations were retained because generative output is not completely deterministic. The later Red Hot Voodoo edition adds another twenty recordings in a separate rhythmic comparison.
10 meanings × 2 interpretations × 3 perspectives = 60 recordings
How it was done
The lyrics, ideas, direction, selection and production came through a human creative process. Generative AI tools helped translate creator-directed lyrics, concepts, structural experiments and style prompts into finished audio.
For AL, this technology is also an accessibility tool. It allows creative intention to become music when traditional physical performance is not always possible. Communication through music should not depend upon a person’s physical ability to perform every instrument heard in a recording.
The three-generation recording was assembled as one continuous lossless WAV of approximately 3 hours and 21 minutes. Identifiable quiet boundaries were detected programmatically and used to split it into sixty tracks in the fixed order Universal → Commercial → Pop, each travelling in the untying direction.
The recordings were analysed for perceived loudness and brought toward a common listening reference while preserving useful dynamics and protecting peaks. This reduces loudness itself as a competing influence on the comparison.

The seven publications
The foundation
The original adult framework: songs developed from conversations about perception, manipulation, authority, fear, choice, greed, vulnerability and human relationships. Some material is explicit.
Finding the other end of the rope
Identifying knots was not enough. Say Hello added relationship: look outward, look inward, find what is shared without erasing difference.
A child-friendly route
A companion project using simpler language and playful characters. Its covers form a dynamic children’s book that can be rearranged to tell different stories for children learning with adult experience.
Perspective through human musical memory
The stable meanings viewed through a working cross-era perspective on longevity, repetition, cultural transmission and different mechanisms of musical memory.
Perspective through rapid communication
The stable meanings viewed through framing, recall and emotional-context mechanisms observed in highly memorable individual advertisements.
Joining memory and communication
The Pop and Commercial perspectives combined while the Knots meanings remain fixed: remember + communicate + understand.
A new rhythmic perspective
Twenty more interpretations of the ten adult songs. A continuous Yanvalou-style Haitian Vodou 12/8 pulse governs the funk-rock arrangement, carrying the same meanings through a different rhythmic setting. Listen to the embedded player and read more on the Music page.
Why it is given freely
If the music helps somebody communicate, think differently, understand another person, question a fear, laugh, talk or find a little more peace, it has already done something worthwhile.
Knots and Mini Knots are shared under CC0 — No Rights Reserved. You may listen, download, copy, share, broadcast, remix or pass them on. You do not need to pay, ask permission or owe anything for receiving them.
Radio stations, educators and curators: there is no expectation that you use the work. Choose only what is appropriate and useful for your audience, and keep Mini Knots clearly separated from explicit adult tracks.
The next medium
The ten meanings were also reduced toward input, state, memory, boundary, relation, resource, choice, consequence, feedback and change. KNOTS/1.0 expresses them for people and computational systems while keeping feelings, context, provenance and uncertainty visible.
Read KNOTS/1.0 →Perhaps understanding a knot does not come from pulling harder on one end. Perhaps it comes from seeing it from another side. And another. Until the place where it is caught becomes visible.
Say hello. Find the knot. Understand it. Untie it.
